A book that I looked at and considered reading was Computer Science: An Overview (6th Edition). This book seemed to be perfect for me, describing itself as giving “students an overview of computer science”(v). Leafing through the pages, I saw diagrams, detailed explanations, and even chapter review sections; this seemed perfect to give me a broader understanding of the basics of my field. Then I took a bit of a closer look. This book was the 6th edition, but it was published in 2000! This made the book way too dated to be very useful, and there was definitely more recent books I could be reading if I wanted to learn more. Reading this book would teach me a lot, but many of the things i would learn would probably not be very useful in today’s computer science world. It wouldn’t be worth my time to read this book, and instead, i could spend my time finding a more recent book, with more relevant information.
