If I had a choice to work in any job I wanted, without a regard for money, logistics, or skills necessary, I would choose to be a game designer. The games I would choose to design would be ones that have a positive impact on the real world. There are many games that do this in many different ways, like raising awareness about certain issues and putting you in other people’s shoes, to sending real money donations to organizations that need it. An example of one such game for good is The Average Everyday Adventures of Samantha Browne. The game follows a girl named Samantha living in her college dorm as she tries to go to the dorm kitchen and make oatmeal for herself late at night. The conflict is that Samantha has debilitating social anxiety. The game highlights the real-world conflicts of people with social anxiety disorder and presents it in a way that will help other people understand their struggle. Games are a unique medium in that they can put you in the shoes of others, forcing you to see things from their point of view. Games like these raise awareness about different issues in our society. My ideal job would be making these kinds of games, ones that can be used to better society.
